Comparison of different Martial art styles?
Nick asked:
I am currently looking for a website or book (or book series) that gives an in-depth analysis of Martial arts styles or any other form of Combat Method from all over the world. Whether ancient or Modern, Western,Oriental or South American, Well-known or Little-Heard of, Sport-Orientated or Real-life situated. Which gives me information on the history of the style, how it was developed, What the style mainly focuses on, (aggression, grappling, locks, striking, defense etc.) Famous Practitioners, What kind of people would succeed with the style, It’s strengths and weakness, Its Philosophies and Traditions What the style was made for, significant features of the style exposure in Commercial Media etc.
But also about Martial Arts in General, Things all practitioners should know about their own particular style, Inspirations, Legends, Famous and inspiring quotes, General Knowledge etc.
If you know of a comprehensive website, Book (or Series of Books), TV series perhaps, or anything like that, If you could please list them down.
Thanks a lot! =D

It will take a lot of research to find to find what you ask. I doubt you can find all the information. If so be ware because much is written that is a bit off. I can recommend a really good book on Okinawan karate. It is called Okinawan Karate, teachers, styles and secret techniques. It was written by Mark Bishop. Bishop has spent much time in Okinawa. The book breaks down the Okinawan styles. It has lineage charts. There is a ton of information about where each style came from and who the major people are within the styles. Lots of terminology and pictures as well. It would be a good place to start your research especially since karate came form Okinawa originally. It has information about the changes made to karate at the beginning of the 1900’s and why. It also tells the how, when and where of karate being introduced to Japan.
I’ve had the book for years and it is the best martial arts book I own.
Best of Luck!
You might register for the forums at and post your question there as well.
This will take a lot of research, books, and knowledge. There is no perfect source to give you.
there is not one source for everything, and and even the best resources have errors or mistakes
as pugpaws2 said this will take a lot of research
As has already been said, it’s best not to rely on one single source. But I have found this site very comprehensive:
